How reactive is your dog?
Six quick questions about your dog, then four safety questions. You get a plain-English picture and one reward-based thing to try. It takes about two minutes. No email needed.
Please involve a professional
Based on your answers, your dog needs help from a qualified professional, not just an app. These behaviors can be caused by pain or illness, and they carry a real risk that a person or an animal gets hurt.
You told us:
- Your dog has bitten a person or a dog in the last 12 months.
- Your dog's behavior changed suddenly in the last month.
- Your dog has been hurt or tried to escape when left alone.
- A child under 6 lives at home and your dog reacts to people.
- Your dog's reactions can be so strong that they cannot settle, turn on something nearby, or make contact.
Until a professional has seen your dog, keep your dog and young children apart unless an adult is right there watching. Use a gate or a closed door the rest of the time.
See a veterinarian first to rule out pain.
Pain, illness and some medicines can cause or worsen these behaviors. Only a veterinarian can check for them.
Then find a qualified behavior professional:
- Find a veterinary behaviorist (DACVB)
- Find a behavior consultant (IAABC)
- Find a certified trainer (CCPDT)
- Find a separation anxiety specialist (CSAT)
Unwoofled will not suggest a training plan or exercise for a dog in this situation. Unwoofled provides training education and tracking. This quiz is not veterinary advice and does not diagnose anything. If your dog's behavior changes suddenly, see your veterinarian first.
What your answers suggest
What is a threshold?
Threshold is the closest you can be to a trigger while your dog still notices it but stays calm and can take food. Closer than that, most dogs find it too hard to learn.
One thing to try: feed on sight
Stand at that distance, where your dog can see the trigger and is still calm. The moment your dog sees it, feed small, tasty treats one after another until the trigger is gone. Stop after 3 to 5 tries, while it is still going well.
If your dog will not take the treat, you are too close. Add distance. Use food your dog loves, like chicken or cheese.
